Stone Belt had been providing services for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families for over 45 years. Stone Belt is composed of facilities in four counties, including Monroe, Lawrence, Owen, and Bartholomew. Stone Belt currently serves approximately 1000 individuals and employs over 375 staff. It is one of the oldest and largest service providers in south central Indiana.

1958 -- Stone Belt is started in the basement of a church by nine families who want
           to provide services for their school-age children.

1959 -- Stone Belt Arc is incorporated.

1960 -- The Headly School opens for children with retardation.

1970 -- Stone Belt opens the first group homes in Indiana. These original group homes
           now house the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community.

1970 -- Lawrence County Arc is started.

1971 -- After three years of grassroots efforts to gain support, Stone Belt opens the
           Stone Belt Comprehensive Center. Stone Belt is still located at this location at
           10th & the ByPass in Bloomington. Stone Belt is the only Arc in the United
           States located on the campus of a university.

1972 -- LARC, Stone Belt of Lawrence County opens their first facility in Bedford,
           Indiana in a small house.

1975 -- By 1975, Stone Belt is serving 157 consumers and has 61 employees

1975 -- Federal Legislation is passed that allows children with disabilities
           to attend public school.

1978 -- The LARC facility is dedicated and begins offering services for individuals in
           Lawrence County. This is made possible by a cooperative agreement with
           Lawrence County ARC.

1985 -- Stone Belt phases the last class of school-aged children into the public school
           system.

1985 -- Stone Belt purchases the first community group homes.

1986 -- Stone Belt makes its first community job placement.

1987 thru 1993 -- Stone Belt opens nine community group homes.

1987 -- Stone Belt opens Infant & Child Developmental Services

1987 -- The Semi-Independent Living program starts and Stone Belt begins supporting
           individuals with developmental disabilities in their own apartments.

1988 -- Sweet Owen Industries is opened to serve individuals in Owen County. This is
           made possible by a cooperative agreement with Owen County ARC.

1997 -- Stone Belt begins offering Employment Services in Bartholomew County.

1999 --TheArcLink.org is started as a partnership between Stone Belt, the Arc of
           Indiana, and the Arc of the United States.

2000 -- Stone Belt of Bartholomew County opens. Stone Belt begins offering
           residential services.

2000 -- Stone Belt starts Psychological Services program to provide behavioral and
           psychological supports to individuals with developmental disabilities and
           their families.

2002 -- Stone Belt adds the Targeted Case Management program.
