Since the 1970s, Stone Belt has offered group homes for individuals with developmental disabilities. Stone Belt currently operates 11 group homes in Monroe and Lawrence Counties. These group homes include 2 homes for children and 9 for adult men and women. Each home provides a 24-hour staffed environment serving up to six individuals in neighborhoods throughout the community.

A lot of emphasis for persons with developmental disabilities is shifting away from the group home model and toward supported living. However, this type of living arrangement can provide a very rich living experience with long-term relationships and sense of family.

Other benefits of group homes include active teaching, a method of teaching that keeps clients actively involved in skills necessary for daily living. These skills can include basic hygiene as well as cooking, laundering, shopping, money management and socialization.

Group homes also provide a lot of professional support with access to staff nurses, social workers, behavior specialists, dieticians and other program coordinators.

Stone Belt group homes also provide privacy to clients. Each individual has his or her own room providing an environment in which individuals can choose to spend time alone or with roommates. The group homes do provide many group activities, but the staff also accommodate many independent activities to meet each person's wants and needs.
